Michael's Farm

Most of you know that Michael took a year off to write a children's book series. Well, the first book is complete with illustrations. We are talking with the publisher now. The 2nd and 3rd books are ready for illustrations and the 4th and 5th books are being written and researched. SO - we will have the organic container garden again this summer! The winter garden did not work out - we started a little too late and everything was killed off in the first frost. This year, we're going by the time-proven Farmer's Almanac.

We're still debating the addition of chickens. We had a gray fox with 4 pups spend the summer at the far end of our back yard - not sure the chickens would survive!

We wanted a garden but didn't want the hassle of weeding and trying to keep the local wildlife out. Using Ginger's old kennel for the enclosure, Michael built a series of shelves for the pots. The idea has worked well - as different veggies have gone out of season, he's been able to reset the pots for new plantings. The dogs tried to help but mostly just wanted to play in the hay.

The watering ban was lifted for gardens but we wanted to continue using the rain barrels. We have three now. It's amazing that a 15 minute rain can fill all three. We got ours at Free Water Atlanta in Peachtree City. We're hoping to add three more. Michael ran a series of hoses from the barrels to the garden, making watering a piece of cake!

He streamlined his planting this year, growing only the veggies that did well last year.

Here's the garden from the herb end . . . all of the herbs are going crazy! Especially the camomile and sage.

We've already pulled our first Swiss chard, peppers, lettuce and radishes. Beets will be next!
